Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome. We all have to do this, sometimes daily, or hourly, or minute by minute.
Other days things might go as planned. But not as often as we would like. Therefore, Improvising and adapting is an important skill and is perishable. Instead of complaining about whatever is happening, think of a way to make it work for you.
Yesterday was super stressful for me. It was for Randy too, and even many of the deputies I work with, younger and older, newer and those with lots of experience. Sure, there was a lot of confidence there in the crowd too, but even they made mistakes during our training and testing.
Several times I had to take the opportunity to combat breath. That's just what we call taking a deep belly breath and then letting it out slowly and take as many of those deep breaths as possible. It did help, but it's hard to do it. In the anxiety moments a part of me just wanted to let the hysterical feeling take over. I reminded myself that this is what I'll have to do in those moments out on patrol, when the opportunity presents itself and things are not going as planned. It happens. Oh yes, things won't often go as planned. Learn to deal!
I know my macros were not perfect, but I improvised and adapted to keep my calories from getting too high. And I also got a very good high intensity cardio session in which felt wonderful.
I had planned the first part of my meals. I packed Randy and I some homemade chicken vegetable noodle soup in thermoses, and an apple. I brought my vitamins and supplements and took them even though I never feel like taking them! What a pain. But I do it anyway because I think about what each thing does in my body to help my health and improve my quality of life as I age.
I'm finally kicking this virus, whatever it is, and I'm focused on weight training as many days as I can. Last night's cardio after the EVOC training was for de-stress and I loved it.
Sometimes I workout in the morning and I always love my view from my workout area. Every time I go to get a drink in between sets I say a prayer of thanksgiving for what I have in front of me and what I get to do physically. Every day is a gift, even if it didn't go as perfectly as planned.
Still, we have to make a plan. The only reason I was able to make yesterday work was because I had a plan first. Then Randy wanted to make a stop after our work and workout for his favorite snacks. He got two chicken pot pies in the mix. We had chips and guacamole on the way home. I ate some too!
Since I ate the chips and wanted one of his cookies before they got locked in the basement with all of his goodies, I skipped the chicken pot pie and stuck it in the fridge. He ate his for dinner, and I stopped at about 1400 calories with my treats. My high intensity workout burned some calories and I know that helped, but I didn't let myself eat over. That made yesterday a total win, I adapted and overcame the situation.
See, it's not going to be the last time this happens. This is a skill you develop over time even if it's not perfect.
Sometimes I don't get to workout in the morning, there is just too much that needs to be done.
The chicken pot pie is still there. I'm glad I didn't eat it when Randy ate his. I can still have it, but I'm not going to have it all at once. I think I'll have a quarter of it and a Level-1 Protein Ice Cream, then I'll make soup for a thermos later for more Sheriff training at the range tonight. I'll pack some soup for Randy and our supervisor as I always do. Our supervisor is an amazing man who Randy and I admire tremendously. I always bring him soup, because who knows when he won't be there anymore to bring soup to. Do things now while you can.
Today's post reminds me of your post about ego depletion. I was so impressed with the theory.
ReplyDelete'Improvise, adapt, overcome' these are kinda preparations(or solutions)before(or when) being ego depleted.
Thank you for the wonderful post as always!
Hope you have a blessed weekend!
You are so right my smart friend Mina. Have a fantastic weekend! I am tired, Randy and I got up early and I worked a parade event for the Sheriff's department. I did fine controlling calories but I will skip a workout. We we6on our feet most of the day.
